Philosophy 1 to 101 - The First Place To Look

sorry... not impressed. The 1 to 101 concept is an interesting idea but the current examples of its delivery are all a bit trivial and trite, like this page; which thinks that the majority of the most important "facts" about philosophy consist of quotes from (generally) dead philosophers. I s'pose if I gave a shit, I could try to write an improved version. But I don't...

as a fellow philosopher, I obviously couldn't agree more. But the "point" as Marx famously said, "is to change it" ("it" being the world we philosophers describe). What I don't see in this rant, is any clue to how we might improve the situation.

This struck me with some force when I watched the first in Dawkins' latest attempt at taking on the creationist mindset (Channel 4 UK). He leapt from proposition to conclusion at the speed we might accept in an academic context but one which clearly sailed straight over the heads of his partially creationist school audience. The first thing we have to understand is just how far down the "rationality" ladder these people have been kept. We need to start BELOW their current level and work up. We ain't doing that, so we're not yet having an impact.

I can tell. This is going to be one of those irritating sites where I agree with most of their conclusions but am embarrassed by their explanations. First impressions is that this is all rather sloppy wishful thinking rather than philosophy. It reveals more about the author's psychology than it does about the structure of the universe. Someone has bitten the wrong end of a philosophy pineapple and reached the utterly bizarre conclusion that Google can somehow replace an important component of the scientific method.
