"It seems that we might be subconsciously encoding the food value of our friends and associates, just in case we become very hungry "
After that, I had to read it all. And I did. Interesting and disturbing. Leaves a couple of questions unasked and unanswered. The most obvious question is: Do the correlations imply cause or effect? In other words, are the differences in neural activity the result of beliefs arrived at after years of conditioning or education; or does the neural bias spring from genetic roots and produce a tendency to develop the beliefs we observe.
The author's argument in favour of genetic benefits for the conservative poor strongly implies genetic determinism. If that hypothesis is correct, then it is very bad news indeed. It implies that there is no realistic possibility of reaching rational agreement between the "dominance seekers" and the "cultural egalitarians".
That, in turn, lends support I'd rather not have found, to my own nightmare scenario that we're heading for The Final War between those of us who wish to embrace the new opportunities to achieve omortality and transform ourselves into one or more new species; and those who not only do not wish to join us (which is their right) but who also intend to prevent us following that path. And will fight to the death to stop us.
I fear we're in the early stages of that War as we speak...

while this is an example of the sort of thing we shouldn't allow governments to do. The fact that we have to kill people from time to time is a regrettable necessity in the real world. Automating the process should be considered a war crime. There must ALWAYS be a human in the loop, making the final decision to pull the trigger. All other roads lead to "Terminator" technology.

I've just included this snippet in today's communique on the grounds that readers will ask "what's funny about this?"
Eggzaccly.
"In a newly-released tape of a 2006 neocon luncheon meeting featuring former War Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, attended by ex-military "message force multiplier" propaganda shills Lt. General Michael DeLong, David L. Grange, Donald W. Sheppard, James Marks, Rick Francona, Wayne Downing, Robert H. Scales and others, Rumsfeld declared that the American people lack "the maturity to recognize the seriousness of the `threats'" -- and need another 9/11.
When DeLong complained about a "lack of sympathetic ears" in Congress, and a lack of interest among the general American public, Rumsfeld responded, "What's to be done? The correction for that, I suppose, is another attack."

yes, and the problem is that despite the clear illegality and criminal conspiracy which created the current war on terror, no politician has yet been held accountable for their crimes. This is a major failure of the political system and, one day, will help provide support for the transition to democracy.

Better late than never, the BBC has got around to telling us about "Curveball" - the alleged source who persuaded all the world's intelligence agencies that Iraq had WMD. Except that he didn't.
